A loop in remote (aka cascade) has its SP automatically adjusted by external logic. The temperature indicating controller (TIC) compares a process variable (PV) value to a setpoint (SP) value, and calculates and sends an output (OP) signal to the steam flow control valve. The process data associated with the tank temperature control loop in a data historian would include: PV or MV. The process variable or measured variable. This function toddles betwee the E=SP-PV (Setpoint-Process Varable) and E=PV-SP. E=PV-SP is direct acting and causes the output Control Variable CV to increase when the input Process Varaiable PV is larger than the Setpoint.

The parameter that reacts to a Control Variable change is the Process Variable (PV) The target value for PV is the Setpoint (SP) Ideally the PV should change in a predictable fashion with a change in CV but in a real-world situation the load or demand will not be constant thereby altering the relation between CV and PV.

If 3 or more consecutive peaks occur upon the change of SP, reduce Integral Reset Rate by 30% and increase Derivative Gain by 50%. e. If PV stays fairly fl at and below (or above) the SP for a long time, In this case, the CV is the duty cycle of the PWM signal that drives the motor. Process Variable (PV) – This is the feedback value returned by the system to the controller. In this example, the PV is the current angle of the motor shaft. Set Point (SP) – Set point is the value that we desire for 1) PID control has two kind of action, forward action and reverse action. The forward action makes the PV reaches to SV by outputting a positive MV when the PV is less than SV. 2) A diagram in which forward and reverse actions are drawn using MV, PV and SV is shown as Fig. 2.9.
